SuGAR
Description
SuGAR (Sufficiency measures impacts on the energy system and Analysis of the Grid Response) investigates sufficiency—the deliberate, structured reduction of energy demand (distinct from efficiency)—as an overlooked lever for the energy transition, focusing on the residential and private-transport sectors. Concrete sufficiency measures are defined and quantified through workshops, a survey and focus groups, gauging households' willingness to accept and acceptability. Their effects are then modelled in the TIMES Belgian energy-system model to assess their contribution to carbon neutrality by 2050 at minimal total system cost, notably by cutting peak demand and the need for peaking plants. A third strand analyses impacts on the electricity transmission grid—balancing, flexibility and long-term adequacy. The project delivers concrete policy recommendations to activate sufficiency, strengthening grid resilience, lowering costs and improving energy security while meeting climate goals.
