BE-SHIFT

Description

BE-SHIFT (Belgian Sociopsychological Interventions for Future Transformation) is a 36-month Belgian research project supporting the country's transition to climate neutrality by 2050, with sufficiency as its cornerstone. Rather than technical fixes, it targets the psycho-social drivers needed to design and accelerate effective sufficiency policies and measures (PaMs) across key sectors—housing, mobility, diet and material use. The project maps relevant sectors and interventions (e.g. modal shift), then quantifies behavioural levers and barriers through a citizen assembly, a 1,000-person survey, sufficiency lifestyle profiles and fuzzy cognitive mapping. These feed scenario simulations of drivers such as social pressure, knowledge literacy and risk aversion. Finally, the TIB3R energy-system model quantifies long-term impacts of sufficiency PaMs on energy demand and greenhouse-gas emissions. Its main output is a context-tailored mix of PaMs plus a readiness assessment, giving policymakers actionable, evidence-based strategies.
